All I want is you

Media savvy chavvies: The young Gypsies and Travellers behind the film "All I want is You."

Young Gypsy people from St. Day in Cornwall have been running a weekly film club where they have just put the finishing touches to a 5-minute film about relationships.  "All I Want is You" was supported by the Lottery through the UK Film Council’s First Light Movies initiative, Our Money Your Dream and YWCA, the project has involved various creative workshops including script writing, animation, camera, music making and editing.

Heidi, one of the participants says “The film is about Gypsy culture because we all have different beliefs and live our lives in different ways.”

The film is about when Lisa Marie’s cousin Destiny arrives for Kathleen’s wedding, Destiny doesn’t realise that her life is going to change also.  Monty, a young boxer, has to prove that he can keep out of trouble even when pushed to the limit.  But will he get his girl and will her Dad approve?

Barbara Santi of Awen Productions, who has produced the project says “The young people have been enthusiastic from the start and their commitment has been fantastic.  They love watching short films and analysing them – they are becoming incredibly media savvy and knew what they wanted to say in their own film and how they wanted to say it.  We have just given them the skills and tools to support the creative process.”

“It’s been the highlight of our week,” says Kelly, another participant.  “Now the film is finished we are going to take it to film festivals and in schools to show people what we are really like.”

Co-producer Wendy Johnson of YWCA says, “They have produced a brilliant piece of work, demonstrating genuine talents for writing, analysis and performance and should be really proud of themselves. It has been terrific to work with them and their families.”

The film was premiered at the Regal cinema in Redruth and will be used as a tool for positive social change.
