Gypsy Drama 'Atching Tan' hits Radio 4

Atching Tan (Romani for 'stopping place') is the BBC's first-ever drama series by and about Romany Travellers.

And this Tuesday the series goes national when Atching Tan premieres on Radio 4 as an afternoon play by Romany playwright Dan Allum.

Romany girl Lovvie Arkley is at a crossroads. Her childhood sweetheart Nelius wants to get married: when Lovvie's younger sister ties the knot, Nelius starts to lose patience.

Things get even more tense when Lovvie meets John, a handsome gorjia drama teacher. Will she take John's advice and follow her acting dreams? Or will she do what's expected of her and marry Nelius before time runs out?

Atching Tan was recorded on location on a private site in Sussex. It stars Travellers playing the parts of Travellers, giving it a fresh and realistic feel.

'Nobody knows Travellers like Travellers do', says Dean Loveridge, who plays Lovvie's dad Jim Henfold. 'We know how we would react, we know what we would say. We know how the attitude is, and we know why the attitude is like it'.

Atching Tan airs at 2:15pm on Tuesday, 23rd November. If you can't catch it live don't worry: you can listen to it on iPlayer here after it's gone out live.
