Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month at Links Academy

Travellers' Times spoke to Karole Lange, Arts Teacher at Links Academy in Hertfordshire, about the ways in which her students have been celebrating Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month this year.

"I have always wanted to celebrate this culture as the  images associated with it are so full of colour and the designs lend themselves to a attractive display.

We set the ball rolling with the Travellers Remember DVD Travellers' Times had sent us about the horse fairs, and of course several of the students have been to Appleby.  I intiated a discussion about the Travelling community and how June was the month we needed to do something in order to celebrate it's history.   Several of the students have Travelling family connections or know them well.

We sourced some images, and the cups were meant to be coloured in the style of Crown derby but that didn’t quite happen!!  The images of the Vardos,  wheels and patterns  are made using glass liners so the girls really concentrated on getting the pieces accurate.  The pupils really enjoyed themselves and the display is still up in school."
