Young New Travellers in history project

The Children’s Society has been awarded £50,000 by Heritage Lottery Fund to research and record a history of the New Travellers.

And the year-long project promises to involve young New Travellers collecting stories and photographs from current and former New Travellers.

Rosie Wild is the project worker. “We want this history to be written from the point of view of New Travellers themselves, so it’s essential that they direct the focus of the project as well as provide the majority of its content.”

“History doesn’t have to be about kings and queens - the everyday lives of people like us are just as important and usually more interesting! There’s plenty of exciting events in New Traveller history, such as the Battle of the Beanfield in 1985 and the Castlemorton Free Festival in 1992, but we also want to hear about people’s daily lives - what made them become Travellers and what they’ve had to overcome to carry on that lifestyle.”
