New Travellers, Old Ways?

4 November 2014

Anybody who has ever travelled with a horse and wagon will remember their experiences with affection. It’s a hard life, but one that involves going slower, travelling the roads less travelled and making do with less. It’s something our grandparents experienced, but too few modern Gypsies and Travellers have known. But each summer more and more people get to experience life as our ancestors did.

This film by Cumbrian filmmaker Tom Lloyd follows New Travellers on the road with horses and wagons. He describes at as: “A modern day dreamtime. The freedom of a life on the road with horses in an English Summer.”

As many are yet again forced to live with less, it reminds us that having less, really can mean living more. It’s called Live Before You Die and well worth watching. Be aware that it contains one scene of nudity.

For those interested in traditional Gypsies and Travellers, Tom is also producing a film about Appleby Fair, called Rolling Thunder, here’s the trailer for it.
