Romany journalists win European journalism prize

“This prize is given to journalists who have dealt with major issues at a European level or have promoted a better understanding of the EU institutions and/or EU policies.” says joint winner and veteran Romany broadcaster Orhan Galjus. The programmes Producer Agnes Lakatos was presented with the prize at the European Parliament in Brussels on October 17th.

“Radio Chachimos is a programme in the Romani language which is broadcast on Swedish Radio International (SRI), and we were the Swedish national winner!” says Galjus. “This is recognition for the work of Romany journalists Agnes Lakatos, Veli Brijani, Adam Szoppe, Orhan Galjus, Jake Bowers, Carmen Marcu, Peter Stefanov, Carlos Munoz Nieto.”

The first European Parliament Prize for Journalism has been awarded to a team of Romany Journalists from across Europe after they produced a live broadcast focusing on the trafficking of Romany women and children. The prize recognises the work of an emerging group of Romany journalists who have collaborated across national boundaries to produce Radio Chachimos (meanining Radio Truth in Romany), which is broadcast on Radio Sweden across Europe.
