The Road Ahead for Welsh Travellers

15 September 2009

The WA Social Justice Minister, Dr Brian Gibbons,  has launched a 16 week consultation on the WA's draft Gypsy Traveller strategy, A Road Less Travelled.

The plan is likely to impact on the future of young Travellers like these young people from Pembroke

Dr Gibbons said he was delighted that Wales was "leading the way in being first in the UK in publishing a draft national Gypsy Traveller strategy.

“The Gypsy Traveller community experience the highest level of inequality of any ethnic minority group. It is imperative that we redress this and provide equality of opportunity for all.

The plan at www.wales.gov.uk/gypsytravellers was developed with local authorities, voluntary groups and other agencies such as the Travellers Education Service, added Dr Gibbons.

And he promised meetings with the Gypsy Traveller community as part of the process which closes on 5 January next year (2010).
