Moving On, Aiming High! are supporting the career aspirations of the Traveller Community in Darlington

15 August 2019

Darlington Borough Council was successful in winning a bid from the Careers and Enterprise Company to provide careers advice and guidance to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT)  young people, and their families in the community.

Our project is aimed at providing support to GRT young people ages 11 to 18 years and started in April 2019 and will run until May 2020........writes Moving on,  Aiming high!

With support from Billy Welch for our first event on the 1st of May 2019, we brought careers advice and support directly to the Rowan West camp.  At this event, the young people had the opportunity to engage in an arts and crafts activity aimed at thinking about what they may like to do in the future. They also had the chance to find out from Darlington College and Darlington Learning and Skills teams about local college courses at Darlington College and other educational qualifications such as apprenticeships. The young people were fully engaged and able to find out about different types of careers, how to get a place at college and think about what they might be good at.

Moving on

We were delighted to attend Appleby Fair on the 7th of June 2019 and set up an area on the hill. It was wonderful to be a part of this important cultural experience and talk to GRT children, young people and families from all over the country.

We are getting ready for our future events which will give GRT young people opportunities to meet employers and ask questions about a variety of jobs.  Events planned are:

  • Pop up careers events at Firthmoor Community Centre on
    • Thursday 26 September and Thursday 5 December 2019 from 12-4.30pm
  • A pop-up school where young people from the GRT community will have the chance to meet employers, do team activities and research jobs and apprenticeships.
    • Monday 20 January to Thursday 23 January at South Park, Darlington and Tubwell Row, Learning and Skills, Darlington.
    •
