Sadlers Farm Fire: A Wake-Up Call for Traveller Site Safety - says Essex charity

A devastating fire at Sadlers Farm, Essex, has left several Gypsy and Traveller families with nothing. As a community, we are heartbroken for those affected, and this tragic incident raises serious concerns about fire safety on Traveller sites. GaTEssex, a community-led organisation supporting Gypsies and Travellers across Essex, is calling for urgent action to improve fire safety measures and support for the families who have lost their homes

.Fires on Traveller sites are particularly dangerous due to the close proximity of caravans, the use of gas cylinders, and the lack of clear safety regulations. Many sites are not equipped with the same fire prevention measures as other residential areas, putting lives at risk. As we push for better protections, it is crucial that families take every possible step to protect themselves.

Here are some essential fire safety tips that could save lives:

Fire Safety Tips for Caravan Living

1. Fit and Regularly Test Smoke Alarms
A working smoke alarm is your first line of defence. Make sure you have one fitted in your caravan and test it weekly to ensure it is working properly.

2. Discuss a Fire Safety Plan with Your Family
Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do if a fire breaks out. Have an agreed escape route and a meeting point away from danger.

3. Park Caravans at Least 6 Feet Apart
Fire can spread quickly, so it is vital to keep a safe distance between caravans, vehicles, and any other structures.

4. Keep a Fire Extinguisher in Your Caravan
Having a fire extinguisher within easy reach can help prevent a small fire from becoming a disaster. Make sure everyone knows how to use it.

5. Use Torches Instead of Candles
Candles are a major fire risk, especially in small spaces. Battery-powered torches and LED lights are much safer alternatives.

6. Turn Off Appliances Before Bedtime
Electrical faults are a common cause of fires. Switch off appliances, including heaters and chargers, before going to sleep.

7. Keep the Area Around Your Caravan Free from Rubbish and Clutter
Flammable materials such as rubbish, gas canisters, and furniture should be stored safely and away from the caravan to reduce the risk of fire spreading.

8. Never Block Air Vents – Keep the Caravan Well Ventilated
Blocked vents can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup and increase the risk of fire. Always ensure good airflow inside your caravan.

9. In an Emergency, Gather in a Safe Place Away from Danger
If a fire breaks out, evacuate immediately and go to a designated safe meeting point away from the fire and gas cylinders.

10. Check Your Gas Pipe Connection is Secure
Faulty gas connections are a serious fire hazard. Regularly inspect your gas pipes and ensure they are secure and in good condition.

11. Turn Off Gas Valves When Leaving or Going to Bed
Always turn off gas cylinders when they are not in use, especially before going to bed or leaving your caravan.

12. Store Gas Cylinders as Far Away as Possible from Your Caravan
If a gas cylinder catches fire, it can explode. Keep them stored safely away from your living space to reduce the risk of a major incident.

Time for Change

The fire at Sadlers Farm is a stark reminder of the urgent need for better safety measures on Traveller sites. While families can take individual precautions, councils and landlords must also take responsibility by ensuring proper fire prevention measures, clear safety guidance, and regular inspections. No one should have to live in fear of losing everything in a fire that could have been prevented.

GaTEssex stands with the affected families and will continue to push for real change to ensure that Traveller sites are safe for everyone. If you or your family have been affected by the Sadlers Farm fire, or if you have concerns about fire safety on your site, please reach out to us for support.

Let’s protect our families and demand the safety we all deserve.
