We are listening to Gypsies and Travellers - say Samaritans
Rural Media, producers of Travellers Times, are proud to have worked collaboratively with GATEHerts and The Samaritans, to produce two films supporting better awareness of Suicide and Suicide Prevention for Gypsies and Travellers.
The first video called “Here to Listen” (film above) is a drama piece about a Traveller Man in his car making a call to the Samaritans and features award winning actor and film director John Connors (who also advised on the script) as the voice of the caller.
The second video (film below) is titled ‘Listening to Gypsies and Travellers’ a documentary film with Claire Rice, Project Manager of Gate Herts in conversation with Alistair Martin from the Samaritans
Rural Media were approached to produce the short films for the Samaritans; the mental health and suicide charity and helpline; who recognised they needed to do more to inform Gypsy & Traveller people about their work after meeting with Claire Rice and Josie O’Driscoll from GATEHerts.
In an interview with Lisa Smith from Travellers’ Times Connors told us “Suicide is the number one killer of Travellers, so, to say that I know people who have killed themself is an understatement; friends, family and my own father, so I was more than keen to be involved and I hope this film saves lives”
