Traveller Education Support Assistant

37 hours per week

Salary: £17,772 - £20,138 pro rata

Fixed Term Contract until 31 August 2019

About us

This is an exciting opportunity to join Support Services for Education. The Ethnic Minority Achievement and Traveller Education Service are looking for a full time Education Support Assistant to work in this busy and hardworking team. This is a varied role which involves supporting Traveller pupils and schools to raise levels of achievement and aspiration.

About the job

The role will involve you carrying out referrals, making assessments of need and establishing links with families and schools. You will act as a point of advice for schools around cultural issues and will work with Traveller pupils at key transition points to help raise stay on rates in education. You will support Traveller pupils in school and will help to remove any barriers to learning. You will attend relevant school and multi-agency meetings to support individual pupils. You will also make home visits as part of home school liaison requests, which may include visits to Traveller sites, fairground sites and roadside families. As part of the team you will be involved in delivering termly events to help improve attendance, reduce exclusions and raise aspirations. There will also be opportunities to deliver on-site teaching at Fair school and to deliver workshops at training events.

About you

You will be a self-motivated team player who is able to act as a champion for Traveller pupils. As a part-traded service within SSE, we offer a range of specialist packages to schools and you will have the opportunity to be involved in both the delivery of and planning of new packages. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing needs of the service is a necessary part of the role, making a positive and committed attitude a necessity.
