Romani activist Lois Brookes - Jones wins award for academic excellence
Romani activist, Lois Brookes - Jones wins an award for academic excellence.
The 21- year old has won the Ede and Ravenscroft Valedictory Award for Excellence in her first year at the University of Chester.
The award is presented to a student who has performed outstandingly outside of their academic subject.
Speaking to the Travellers' Times Lois said, "I hope this shows other Gypsy Roma and Travellers, young and old, who want to pursue higher education, that we are capable and nothing is off limits, Opre Roma".
The international relations and politics student will attend the Valedictory and prize giving service on the 7th June where she will be formally presented with the award in recognition of her outstanding academic and voluntary contributions.
Anthony Parker, the universities academic secretary said, "at valedictory, we celebrate and recognise the contributions our students make to every aspect of life, from academic achievements through to sporting prowess and community involvement".
