“Tyler's mission was crystal clear from the start: he wasn't fighting for himself, but for the future. His goal was to ensure that by the time his younger brother Harry entered the senior school, the prejudice and discrimination faced by the Travelling community would be a thing of the past.”

In a remarkable testament to student-led change, Frome College’s recent 'Gypsies, Roma and Travellers (GRT) Awareness Week' stands as a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity and inclusion. At the heart of this transformation is former student Tyler Brown, whose groundbreaking work has earned him prestigious recognition from the Somerset Anne Frank Youth Awards.

Tyler's mission was crystal clear from the start: he wasn't fighting for himself, but for the future. His goal was to ensure that by the time his younger brother Harry entered the senior school, the prejudice and discrimination faced by the Travelling community would be a thing of the past. Today, as Harry walks through the same corridors Tyler once did, he experiences a dramatically different environment – one where the Traveller community feels welcome, supported, and heard.

The awareness week, organised entirely by GRT students, featured a rich tapestry of events designed to educate and unite:

  • Cultural assemblies showcasing GRT heritage and traditions
  • Romani dance lessons bringing traditional movement to life
  • A pioneering afternoon tea session where GRT parents engaged directly with Heads of Houses
  • A visit from a traditional horse and trap, connecting students with authentic Traveller culture
  • A poignant tree planting ceremony symbolizing growth and lasting change

Today, Tyler studies at Cardiff University, carrying forward his passion for advocacy. Meanwhile, Harry, who joined our college in September 2024, steps into an institution forever changed by his brother's dedication. The prejudices that once seemed insurmountable have given way to understanding, respect, and celebration of the GRT community.

Tyler's work reminds us that change often begins with one person's vision. Through his unwavering commitment, he has not only transformed our school but has set a standard for how educational institutions can embrace and celebrate the rich diversity of their student body.

As we continue to build on Tyler's legacy, our college stands as a beacon of inclusion, where every student, regardless of their background, can thrive and feel truly at home.
