Funded Opportunities for PhD Study in London - GRT graduates urged to apply
Six London universities have PhD funding available for honours degree and Master’s degree graduates and are urging Gypsy, Roma and Traveller students to apply – there is an online question and answer session for potential applicants on the 17th of October 2024 from 10am to 11.30am.
The UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership is an ESRC funded organisation that unites six leading social science institutions.
Increasingly more and more people from Traveller, Gypsy and Roma communities are going to university (https://www.travellerstimes.org.uk/news/2023/07/gypsy-and-traveller-students-starting-university-doubles-year-new-government-figures).
After graduation, many students from the communities have told me that they would like to continue their study to postgraduate level but have concerns about funding.
The Economic and Social Research (ESRC) UBEL Doctoral Training Partnership is a collaboration between six leading London universities: University of Greenwich, University of East London, University College London, School of Oriental and African Studies, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Birkbeck.
UBEL offers ESRC funded studentships for PhD doctoral studies and would especially welcome applications from Traveller, Gypsy and Roma graduates.
In order to apply this year, you need to have achieved (or expect to achieve by 30 September 2025) an upper second- or first- class honours degree or a Master’s degree from a recognised UK university, or the equivalent qualification if gained outside the UK.
The funding is competitive and successful applicants will receive a UBEL studentship which will cover tuition fees and a minimum stipend of £21,237. This figure is for full-time study, includes the London Allowance and is for 2024-2025. Part-time options are also available. Before applying for the UBEL studentship, graduates need to have applied for a PhD programme from one of the six London universities which are part of the partnership. Please see the pathways which are available: https://ubel-dtp.ac.uk/groups-pathways/
