The Travellers’ Times spoke to Mena Mongan - one of the organisers of this ground-breaking event.

“Our aim to create an International Irish Traveller Day,” said Mena – who lives in the London Borough of Hackney and works for the charity London Gypsies and Travellers.

“We want to celebrate our rich heritage and culture and history of Irish Travellers in Britain.”

The idea first came about in a conversation between Mena and Josie O’Driscoll – who is the Irish Traveller Chief Executive Officer of GATE Herts, a Gypsy, Roma, Traveller charity based in Hertfordshire.

Mena and Josie then set up a steering group of Irish Traveller activists, based in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland, who have been meeting for nearly two years to make the idea become a reality.
