A film about award-winning Traveller singer, Thomas McCarthy.
Venue: Cinema City, Screen 3, Wednesday 12 June, 6.30pm.
In 2008, June was established as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month in Britain. To celebrate this event, there will be a screening of 'Songs of the Open Road', a documentary profile of Traveller singer Thomas McCarthy (Pat Collins, 2022, 50 minutes).
'Award-winning singer Thomas McCarthy is the inheritor of a largely undocumented song tradition among the Irish and UK’s Traveller communities and has over 1200 songs in his repertoire.
The role Travellers have played in keeping many great songs alive – for everybody – has been crucial in shaping the folk tradition as we know it'.
