'Life as a Traveller' an animation by young Scottish Travellers

25 August 2020

Travellers' Times is very pleased to share this wonderful animated film ‘The Two Fires’ produced by Traveller pupils from Coupar Angus Primary School, Perth and Kinross as part of a project led by STEP

Dr Pauline Duncan told Travellers' Times: "The pupils felt it was important for others including their peers, teachers and the wider community to know more about Travellers; who they are, what they do and where they go. The project was part of the Barriers to Solutions project (STEP 2019-20) aimed to improve relationships between Gypsy/Traveller communities and service providers through arts-based interventions.  A series of community animation workshops were facilitated by expert animator, Jim Stirk from @AnimationJam."

In partnership with STEP (Scottish Traveller Education Programme), Jim supported pupils and young people from education settings and Gypsy/Traveller sites across Falkirk, Dumfries and Galloway, Perth and Kinross and Highlands to express their views on important issues through the animation. The pupils have presented their animated films at internal film screenings for the school, families and community members.

Keep your eyes open for STEPs online animated gallery showcasing all the young people’s ideas about their lives and what it means to be a Traveller today coming soon!
